The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has successfully completed testing of the first two Mpox samples in its state-of-the-art Molecular Lab, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s response to the disease.

The achievement comes on the heels of a pivotal visit by the Mpox Research Project Team from the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) – Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL) on Monday, October 14, 2024, where RSUTH was selected as the exclusive center for Mpox testing in Nigeria’s South-South region. This recognition affirmed RSUTH’s leading role in innovative healthcare and public health research, particularly in the fight against infectious diseases like Mpox.

The Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, expressed great joy at this significant achievement, highlighting the importance of this milestone for the hospital and region. Prof. Alikor took the opportunity to extend heartfelt thanks to His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara GSSRS, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, for his dedication in delivering quality healthcare to Rivers People. He also commended the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Rivers State, Dr. Adaeze C. Oreh, for her leadership and commitment to public health, which has been instrumental in making this breakthrough possible. Prof. Alikor emphasized that this achievement is an testament of the collective effort of the state government, healthcare professionals, and research teams, underscoring RSUTH’s continued dedication to innovation and excellence in medical care.

The successful completion of the first tests marks a key moment in the hospital’s growing reputation as a hub for cutting-edge medical research and diagnostics. The results, which have already been released to the State Epidemiologist, were sent from the Ministry of Health for testing at the newly established RSUTH Molecular Lab.

This latest development underscores the hospital’s dedication to providing high-quality healthcare and its important contribution to the national effort in combating Mpox, a virus that has become a significant public health concern in recent years.
